Accident

The pieces below were written by the boys in Mrs McTeague's and Mrs Geraghty's classes as part of our work on "Building the Wall of China" They were asked to write a paragraph describing an accident that took place while the wall was being built:

Building The Wall by Darragh Fahey
While I was passing up some bricks, I heard a faint thump coming from the other side of the wall. Then another. It was louder. Some people were screaming. "The Mongols are invading!" cried a peasant working on the higher part of the wall. When I came down, I saw some bodies lying around, blood spewing from their deep wounds. My grandfather and I hid while away while my father and thousands of different soldiers held of the Mongol invasion. Soon the invasion was over. There were lots of casualties. But Hongwu said once the Great Wall is finished, there would be no more casualties

Accident by David O'Reilly
I was one day working on the wall when I heard a big BANG!!!! I was carrying some bricks so I put them down & ran towards the scene. It was very hard to see because smoke was everywhere. I started waving my hands so the smoke would clear off. Then to my horror, there were dead bodies nearly everywhere. I started to have a look to see if anyone was around. I seen a moving hand in the rubble. I ran over and tried to pull off as much rock as I could but it was to heavy. I called for help and then a pair of men came over and helped me pull him out. After that I looked around for evidence of how the wall fell. It could have been the Mongels a loose brick just about anything. Its a mystery that might never be solved.

Accident by Thomas Nyland

There I was, standing at the northern end of the wall. Then it happened. 100 feet away, the water that Qin Dynasty used in building the wall burst it's barriers. Flying bricks, water, several planks of wood and boulders scattered everywhere. My right leg throbbed in  pain. A long, narrow wooden splinter pierced my skin. Ignoring it, I began stumbling through a grey cloud of dust, looking for my fellow builders. I heard a voice squealing "Help! Please, help!"

Frantically, I edged toward the pleading, weak voice. Somehow, I recognized the voice. It was my grandfather! I heaved the large, heavy rocks from my path and helped him up. He mumbled that my dad was working alongside him, so he must have been somewhere nearby.

After a long forty-five minutes, we recovered a number of elderly men and some of my classmates. The evening sky was gradually getting darker, and I was worried. We still had not located my dear father. But then, under a huge rock, my grandfather spotted a bloody hand and a severed foot  beside it. He called the rest of us over and we all helped in lifting the rock. We heaved and pulled until the boulder-like rock was lifted aside. I was a little startled at first, but then I realized it was true. Helplessly lying there, was my father, motionless. He had passed away.........

Mysterious Animal by Ben McHale.

I looked from behind the tree and there it was, something I never seen before. I was astonished   because it looked around 10 feet high and its bright orange eyes were staring at me. I saw it chomping at a dead deer that was now torn to pieces. It didn’t look so friendly to me. I could hear my heart beating out of my chest. It felt like half an hour to me but it was actually only 2 minutes. It took two large strides forward and I took a few steps back. I reached out for my camera and before I knew it, it was gone. That’s when I realised the chase was on. I saw it going past the hill of ice. I sprinted over and saw some meat on the floor. I ran on. I found a tree that was knocked down yet there was no people out here so it had to be a wild animal. I heard there was something called the yeti. I was not sure if it exists but if its 10 feet tall and has bright orange eyes I’ve seen it. I kept searching until I heard a screeching noise like eeeeeeeeeeeeeeehhhh!!! I really panicked. Just then I realized with all that chasing I was lost! I followed my foot steps back to my jeep, but what I saw was my jeep tipped over and everything torn to pieces. I was worried now because I had nothing left and somewhere out there was a beast that seemed to be after me.

Accident by Jack McDonald

As I stumbled along the rocky muddy track with my grandfather and my father along side, I wished that the wall could just build itself and I was in bed like my brothers, mother and my grandmother but I knew that that would never happen. It suddenly dawned upon me that more and more people were joining the group from all angles which was causing lots of people to fall off the edge but I had grown used to this in the small length of time I had been working on the wall.  There was silence for a long period of time and all you could hear was people's feet scraping of the stones, and people heaving themselves up the steep cliff.  Then a tall man a bit behind us piped up" The Mongols will never get us when the wall is finished" he said with a smirk on his face and once he had uttered the Mongols they jumped out from what seemed like nowhere throwing anything they had our way.  There was blood spraying  everywhere I was horrified.  My father grabbled me and my grandfather and pulled us into a cave.  We waited in silence for about 20 minutes not bearing to even breath, and when we did breath it felt like we were shouting, all we could hear was screams of terror. After about 2 hours my grandfather uttered the words I think they are gone now, and sure enough we took a peak outside and all we could see were dead bodies lying everywhere and to our amazement there was a huge hole in the wall. Then we made our way back to the cottage hoping the rest of our family were alright.

Accident by Declan Mortimer

Bang, bang, bang I heard. I thought to myself ha,ha,ha imagine if that was the Mongals, but then a weird looking man broke through the wall and angrily said, ''attack'.' Then a tribe of Mongolians were chasing me, I ran as fast as I could but that wasn't enough. I looked back and I saw the look on there faces, they wanted to kill. I thought to myself could this be the end of my life?

Accident by Stephen Lammond

It was raining for several days, and the path was wet and muddy. I was very nervous because on one side, there was a steep cliff. Everyone is working hard and helping each other because we want to get the wall built.

Suddenly, there were cries for help echoing from the wall.  I ran over to see what was the fuss. Then I saw the Mongols attacking. I turned in the opposite direction and ran for my life, forgetting the cliff that was there.

Before I knew it, I was clinging to the edge. My heart was thumping and I was terrified.  I screamed for help. I felt alone and scared. Then I saw a man with a big scar, it was my dad! He held his hand out and I reached for it. Before I knew it I was up off the edge, and on solid ground.

The Incident by Oisin Quinn

I carried the rocks up to the wall. Then I heard it "OOkaa OOka Ayyyyy." That means surrender or die.I then realised it was the Mongols but we did not give up. We sent thirty five soldiers down and had thirty five more at the ready. It was a brutel battle many of there men were killed and wounded and many of our men were killed and wounded. Finally the Mongols retreated the smell of blood pierced the air. We sent men down to retreive the bodies of the hurt and the dead and bring them back onto the wall. And from then on we were always ready for an attack.

Accident by Eoin Canning

It rained every day and every night for the last six weeks. The water was rising and the men were scared."Please Hongwu, we need to leave before the water rises even more!

"It will rise no more, now get back to work". As I looked around I  heard screams for help."HELP!HELP!".As I realized my life was in danger, the scaffolding I was standing on collapsed. I clung to the wall, holding on with all my might. I called for help, but I realized.

my co-workers had been washed away in the flood. I held on for at least 10 minutes, and as I was about to loose my grip my best friend Sanga threw a rope from the top of the wall. He pulled me up to safety and in doing so saved my life. I will never forget that day for the rest of my life and I will always be in Sanga's debt. Altogether 38 people lost their lives in the flood that day.

Accident by Evan Lawless.

Bang.  Dust clogging up my view.  People yelling help in the distance.  I ran towards the chaos. Running and stumbling towards the scene as the dust thickens.  I finally got there.  As the dust clears to my horror, a part of the wall had collapsed.  There are casulties.  Dead bodies lying under the rubble, Blood spewing from all sides.  Doctors rushing to help the injured.  None of my family were working in the area at that time.  Thank God for that.

Accident by Oran Groarke.
It was another tiring working day. While I was carrying that big pile of bricks over to the wall I heard a cracking noise. I rushed over to see a huge pile of smoke blocking the way. I rushed through all the rubble to find one of my school friends Ki. I asked him fearfully what had happened. He said a peasant worker was on a scaffold and tripped on a brick and fell off. Tragically he passed away. This was a huge shock to Hongwu and all of the other peasants because the man who passed away was a peasant too. How is Hongwu going to take the bad news because that man was his grandad!

Accident by Ben McHale.
When I was taking a heavy load of bricks, I heard a bang. It seemed that it was coming from the left hand side. I ran over as fast as I could and when I got there I saw a huge hole in the new part of the wall. I was terrified as anybody would be when they heard a loud bang. Someone told me that the Mongolians shot 50 rocks from catapults into the new part of the wall that hadn’t settled in. Others said that someone accidentally set off the fireworks for the celebrations when we were finished the wall. To me it was a mystery because I wasn’t there to see that tremendous bang. All I could think about was if anyone had survived that bang. I searched and searched until I heard a call. It sounded like it came from a few metres away I ran over and saw one single hand from under the rubble I called for help and soon five more men came over. I asked them to help me remove the rocks to get the poor man out, after we got him out he told us that he had a crushed tibia. We carried him to the stretcher and bought him to the carriage. When everyone was ok we went back to rebuilding that part of the wall.

Accident by Alastair Hill.
I heard a loud, crashing sound before slowly turning round. When I look behind me I witnessed horrible, grey dust blast everywhere. To my surprise, horror and misery, part of the wall had collapsed. I ran over and looked through the rubble. It was horrible. There was blood splatter and brain matter everywhere. There were hats, shoes and bodies on the broken bricks. I was frightened and sad. I worried so much about my father and grandfather. Were they buried beneath the rubble of grey bricks? There was only one way to find out. I quickly ran through the huge, deep crowd looking to see if I could spot my father or grandfather. I took one last look before I was about to give up when I saw my father. I ran directly towards him at tremendous speed. As I got closer to him I saw my grandfather was with him. Hongwu had ordered all of us to remove all the broken bricks, bodies and clothing. I hated this job but it had to be done. I removed broken bricks and torn clothing. I avoided dead bodies if I could. Soon I was done removing bricks and had to go back to building the wall.

Accident by Darragh Reilly.
I was putting the last bricks on the wall when I heard a thumping sound. I looked behind me and saw the Mongals. They had massive swords, dangerous flamethrowers and rock hard shields. They were running towards the wall. There was only one thing we could do and that was get the fireworks that we had just invented. So we lit the fireworks and BOOM!!!! It made a racket of a noise and scared the crap out of the Mongals. The great wall was never to be harmed again.

Accident by Michael Waldron.
I was walking along the road going to get some bricks to build the wall, when I heard a high pitched scream coming from the top of the mountains. I rushed up quickly to see what was going on. When I got up I saw my own granddad. He was hanging off a cliff after being blown away by a strong wind. He was on the verge of dying. I had to save him.  I went over to do something but it was too late.  He was gone. But we have to get over it and move on, after all people die every day, but they’re always with us in our heart. I went down the rocky mountain to tell everyone. They were as devastated as I was. "We have to get over it and move on", I told them, that's what granddad would have wanted. We all realized that there was no time for idling around, we had to build the wall for our own sake.

Accident by Patrick Loftus
I was carrying some heavy bricks up the great wall when suddenly, out of nowhere, a freak accident occurred. A man was carrying bricks to the edge of the wall passing them to another man when he just slipped of the edge of the wall. This was a very shocking tragedy for me, Emperor Hongwu and my fellow co-workers because one of our best workers had just died. I felt absolutely terrible for the man’s family and it must have also been difficult for Emperor Hongwu to break the news to his parents. But unfortunately, we could not stand around and mourn the man all day, we had to get back to work with heavy hearts. There was a job to be done.

Accident by Dylan Howley.
I was building when I saw an arrow fly at wicked speed and hit one of the workers. There was blood squirting everywhere. Then I saw who it was, it was the Mongolians attacking with catapults and rocks aiming at the wall. Luckily enough their accuracy wasn't that great. We were all sad that a worker had died and how were we going to tell his family. The next day they attacked again with better accuracy and hit the wall I heard creeks in the wall. When I looked down I saw a big crack and overnight it turned into a big hole. Hongwu was really, really angry when he saw what they did so his army attacked back viciously with axes, swords and catapults. Well they knew we were going to attack and they had all sorts of weapons. We started war straight away but they were very sneaky because they had people attacking from ground and on high buildings. After war all you could see was puddles of blood  and dead bodies everywhere and burnt down buildings. I looked at the wall and saw an even bigger hole and you wouldn't really know there was half a wall there before it. Well after the years of work it has gone to waste because of our enemies who we were keeping away from us with the wall. In the end we defeated them.

Accident by Peter Basquille.

I was building the wall on the edge of a steep and scary drop down.  My Dad told me not to look down as he knew I was afraid of heights.  As I was reaching to put another brick in the wall I looked over and saw another boy in and around my age.  The boy was leaning over too much and I thought it was going to be the end of him.  I noticed he was secured to his Dad because he had a thick rope around his waist.  I heard a high pitched scream, the boy had slipped. His Dad was taken with him. Suddenly we all stopped our jobs and quickly went to help the two in danger. That was two of our best workers gone, this meant it was going to take us longer to build the wall.

Denis, on the other hand, decided to go with the flow and wrote slightly more than one paragraph..in fact he couldn't stop....maybe he'll be writing a book next!!!

Incident by Denis Vajenine

One day, I was working on the wall that we were building when SUDDENLY I heard a voice from the side of the cliff shouting “HELP!!!!! HELP!!!!!!” I froze right on the spot which had been so relaxing because of the heavy, stacked bricks. The voice stopped and right that second I had seen the person who was shouting fall off the side of the cliff because a Mongol had shot him with a bow and arrow. I was so sad that I had covered my eyes and started crying as tears trickled down my face right that instant.

After I had stopped crying, I spotted a whole group of around ten Mongols up on the ridge where the wall was being built. I dropped the wagon stacked full of bricks and ran down to the village unnoticeably to tell the people of the village to get ready, the Mongols were coming.

We got ready for the Mongols as they approached us. I got up on the roof of my semi-detached house and had a much clearer view of the raiders. But the bad thing was that the part of the wall that we had built had collapsed as it was so new. I shouted “nooooo” all the hard work we had put into it, the muscle it took, the days it had wasted, the deaths it had caused! Most importantly the Mongols were the ones to blame for several of us dying that day. Thankfully I saw some workers come down, including my dad and granddad. I came down from the roof and hugged them both.

I was so angry that I could tear the Mongols arms and legs off if I could. They came down from the cliff and started shooting arrows at us. I went home and grabbed my sling shot, some fireworks that I had recently received from my dad for my birthday and a pair of sticks I had rubbed with oil. I went outside and lit a fire with the pair of sticks, put the fire on the fireworks and quickly launched it into the air with my slingshot. Scared of the fireworks exploding, Mongolians ran as fast as they could.

My whole village cheered for me until they saw the broken wall that had collapsed. It took us only two years to rebuild it because the wall had the pieces scattered right in front of it. Since there were no bricks to carry up the cliff I was put on passing duty. It involved passing the bricks up for the next person who had to glue all of them onto the wall. Life was hard, but not as hard as it used to be pulling the bricks up the cliff, what a hard life that was! After the wall was rebuilt I got a soldier's medal for my bravery, that made me so proud!
