Radish and A Special Event

Radish by  Stephen Lammond
I looked up and saw a light coming into my home (aka a pocket).  A familiar gentle hand  lifted me out onto the table.  I saw an old woman admiring me.  She picked me up and started turning and twirling me around.  I could see that Andrea was angry.  The lady sat me down between two dolls and two houses.  I could see that the woman was pet talking Andrea but I could not quite make it out.  Andrea took control of me and started moving me around left, right and centre.  I could see she was moving me over to the woman doll and then over to the man doll.  I thought to myself "Is this a new game she didn't tell me about" as I was very exhausted.  Then she picked me up and said that 'I' wanted to live in both.  Andrea gently lifted me back into her pocket.

As I saw the light I felt  a familiar hand grasp me harder than normal. When I was put on the table I saw Andrea and a strange woman in front of me. Andrea looked very upset. I then heard the two of them talk I was in front of two brick wall with two rag dolls at each Andrea made me make a few movements then I heard a familiar sound the sound of Andrea's parents arguing outside the room. when I focused on what Andrea  was saying I noticed that she really didn't know what to do so she decided that she wanted to live in one home one week and the other the next I then smiled and so did Andrea and then I was put back in my pocket house  and now I'm happy 24/7 whichever house I'm in.

I was rummaging through my home to get a comfortable spot when a familiar hand fragile and gingerly picked me up. Uh Oh I thought to myself I had heard talks about moving houses but I never thought I would be involved. I was given to an old lady who asked me would I like to live in house A Mums house or house B dads house but I just wanted to live in Andrea's pocket so I let her do the talking she didn't want to move at all. In the end we decided to live in house A one week and house B the next week. It was very hard on Andrea but very easy on me.

While I'm in the familiar pocket of Andrea, I'm picked up by her soft gentle hands. I see an old woman smiling at me and I'm very confused. The old woman says "\who are you? And Andreas dad said that he bought me for her but then Andreas mum said that she bought me for her. And then Andrea put me back in her pocket and covered my ears so I wouldn't hear her parents arguing. Later on, the old women got two dolls and made two toy houses. One house was house A which was her mums house and house B was her dad's house. The old women said house A or B. Andrea looked at me and said house C. And the women said that it can't happen. Like looked at Andrea and she said house A and B. So the women made a decision and Andreas parents agreed.

I look up to see a big hand reaching in to my home (a.k.a.  a pocket of Andrea’s trousers). It’s a familiar soft, delicate hand. When I come out, I see this old, grey haired woman. Andrea and the old woman are talking about which house Andrea and me should go to. Then the old woman picks me up off the table and in front of me are two small houses. Beside the houses are two dolls, one a mammy doll and one a daddy doll. Then she asks Andrea “Which house should Radish go to, house A, Mammy’s house or B, Daddy’s house”. Andrea replied “Radish will go to house C, with Mammy, Daddy and me.” I could hear Andrea’s parents arguing outside really loudly. They decided that Andrea and me would go to Mammy’s house one week and Daddy’s house the following week.

Radish by Darragh Fahey

Hi. I'm Radish. I'm going to tell you a story about a family counselling meeting.
I was in Andrea's pocket one day when she took me out of her pocket and held me tight. I knew she was feeling funny because she always held me tight when she was feeling funny. I could hear voices, two voices, one whose voice I recognized but not the other one. The woman's whose voice I didn't recognized took me out of Andrea's hands and turned me upside-down. She asked Andrea my name. Andrea had no response. Andrea's Mum told her my name. Then Andrea's Mum and Dad started arguing about who bought me. When they shut up the woman went right up to my face and said "Hello Radish". She started talking to me, but of course, I couldn't say anything. Then she made two LEGO brick houses and made two dolls sit down beside each house. She then made me walk to each one saying "House A?, or House B?". In the end Andrea said both houses and she stuffed me back into her pocket. They talked for about one more minute, and then, we left.

I was landed on the table in an unfamiliar room, there was a musty smell coming from a pile of old  books next to me. I could feel Andrea squeeze me ever so tightly and she didn't seem one bit happy.  There were loud voices and Andrea was trying to drown out the sound by covering my ears.  There was a grey haired lady standing opposite Andrea before I knew it the lady was poking at me and moving me from side to side towards what appeared to be houses.  I looked up at Andrea and I knew from the expression on her face she would rather be anywhere but in this horrible place.

"Wow it's hot in Andrea's pocket. Actually, where is Andrea now. Wait, what is the lady doing. No, no, no! She picked me up" Radish thought to himself. Even though Radish was taken out of Andrea's pocket and now is 10 centimetres of the table, he felt like he was 10 metres over a table with spikes covering all of it. Mainly because of him being frightened of heights. The lady finally put him down. "What is she doing now?" Radish thought to himself. Then he looked up at Andrea and saw that he liked the lady. She was looking around while hearing the lady babble from behind her. "If she could only stop constantly repeating house A or house B but she can't and that's the problem!" At last she heard Andrea's response, "House A and B,". "At last it's over!" Radish thought.

Each of the boys in the group from Mrs McTeague's was asked to write about one special event in their lives - just one small moment on anything they wished. Here are their paragraphs:

Fishing  By Denis Vajenine
When I was fishing with my dad he taught me how to fish. It’s very simple and fun. He seemed quite good at it. We used worms to go on the hook. The fish love worms since they can’t go out of the water. My dad gave me a beginner’s rod just to try it out. When I swung the rod up into the air it got hooked onto a swing, so my dad decided we should go out into the lake in our inflatable boat. As we approached the middle of the lake I spotted a shoal of fish swimming loosely around. We knew that we had to stop and my dad said that they were Sacramento split-tails. I fainted after that sentence, just joking, but I still didn't know what he was saying. I threw my rod into the lake and waited for a fish. Surprisingly I got one quite quick, but only one. My dad cooked it over a fire and we ate it. I would love to go fishing again.

This was my first time to experience a Cup Final.  After three rounds we were in the final game of the season.  The starting line-up was:
·        Stefan
·        John
·        Myself – Peter
·        Mark
·        Cian
·        Oran
·        Pearse
·        David
·        Luke
·        Bob
·        Adam
I came off after about fifteen minutes because of my Achilles heel.  Conor O’Neill scored the decisive goal in the end.  It was a terrific day after all.  We were going up to receive our medals and they ran out.  Mark and I did not receive one.

The Long Cycle by Alastair Hill
As we cycled down a tree line road I felt the wind running through my hair. As we turned the corner I imagined I was in the Tour De France except in Ireland. With my brother in front and dad I felt safe and secure. The feeling of going down a slope was the best of all .I turned from Tour De France to Formula 1 because I was so fast. Lucky I made it back in one piece.

Chelsea 1-0 Everton by Oran Groarke
As the ref was a fraction away from blowing the final whistle, Chelsea were on the attack. Phil Jagielka  had just fowled Ramires on the edge of the box in the 93rd minute. It was a nail biting  match, although it was 0-0 Chelsea looked like they were going to score. As Lampard took the free kick butterflies flew through my belly like they were a Formula 1 car. As the ball came in, I nearly bit all my nails off nervously. The ball came in to Tim Howard the opposite teams  keeper . And he tapped it into the net. In a fraction of a second I took a sigh of relief and shouted ”C’mon Chelsea!”And it was brilliant to witness it.

BMX Biking by Michael Waldron
I looked down the steep bumpy hill as I was sitting on my bike uncomfortably ready to take off over the steep ramps ahead. I took off at high speed with my wheels bumping off little stones on the ground below. When I headed towards my first ramp I was a little nervous and for a good reason, I tumbled over a bigger stone on the ground and slid along the floor, my hand was scraped a bit but that didn’t bother me. Soon I got the hang of it and I felt like I was gliding on air. All to quickly my adventure was over but I look forward to doing it again soon.

The boys in Mrs McTeague's were asked to write a response, as a sea captain, to a story we read called "The Widow's Treasure" where a cantakerous wealthy widow asked one of her captains to bring her back the most valuable thing in the world from his travels. These are their stories of what they brought back.

Mystery Treasure
Mystery Treasure by Ben McHale

One day I got a letter from a rich woman saying that she needed me for a job. I went over there straight away. When I got there she told me that she needed me to get the most valuable thing in the world. I asked her “and what might that be?” She that’s for you to find out she said. I was puzzled by this command but I still was determined to find it. I got onto my boat, the S.S Glory, and set sail.

The sea was empty all you could see was water and no land at all. Suddenly one of my crew members shouted “land ahoy” I looked through my telescope and I saw a tiny island. As we got closer the island got bigger and bigger. When we got on shore we realised we were at the Amazon rainforest. Something popped into my head that said this is where we would search.

I told two of my crew to come with me and the other three to go the other way. I found a beautiful flower and when I rubbed it on the sailors arm his rash disappeared. I realised that this could be the cure for the sea rash, which had killed many sailors over the years.

On my way home I was feeling proud of what the widow might say about the flower. I arrived at the deck when the widow came running over. I told her to come on and take a look at what I brought her. She walked behind me curiously as I went inside to get the flower. I showed it to her and was waiting for her to reply. Then her face went red and she shouted “What is this” I told her that it was the cure for the sea rash. She ordered me to destroy this flower immediately. A year later her son got the sea rash and died.

The Trip by Oran Groarke

As I was docking the boat from a long trip from Spain, a fearsome looking lady was standing near by . She had jewels on her so I wondered what her troubles were? She growled at me “Go get me the most precious thing in the world. And make it quick!” I had a thought about it and said “I will have it back on Tuesday.” We went up to Germany where they had a huge diamond ring but I refused. Then we went up to Portugal because one of our crew used to live there. He said they had the biggest diamond in the world. But I refused. We were losing options, when one of our men  shouted “Land ahoy!”We came down to Co.Kerry where they showed a peace offering and gave us some shamrocks. It Turned out to be St.Patrick’s Day. I shouted “Yes! Yes! We finally found it!”

Mystery Treasure by Patrick Loftus

Before my ship departed, a woman asked me to embark on a journey to find the most precious thing in all the land. After she asked me the question I was puzzled and even after my ship departed I was still puzzled. What does she mean does she want gold, diamonds, emeralds or jewels? Aha! I know what she wants she wants a ship load of wheat to feed all of the poor people in Stavoren. I sailed across the seven seas battling winds and waves to find this precious cargo and in the land of plenty I found it where everybody had enough to eat. This wheat is surely the most precious cargo of them all.

My Most Valuable Possession - My Journey To Clare Island by Michael Waldron

You will never guess what happened to me last summer, I was playing a match for Castlebar Mitchels against Clare Island in Clare Island and on the way home I realized I had left one of my boots in the dressing room. I believe those boots are lucky because I am Mitchels top scorer and since I lost that boot I haven’t scored a single point and were playing the All Ireland Final against St. Vincents next Monday so I need that boot!
My first problem was how to get there.  I sat on the pier, mystified. How was I going to get through six miles of wild stormy seas. Then out of the corner of my eye I saw a rickety old rowing boat. I ran over to see if it was seaworthy.  It wasn’t in good shape, but Pat Holmes depended on me, so I had to give it a go.
I pushed myself off the pier wall with one of the oars and off I went on the scariest journey of my life.  I was half way through and I felt like my arms were going to fall off, and the waves crashing against the boat didn’t help either.  I was so scared at this stage that I felt like giving up but I thought about the match and kept going.  Eventually I got there and headed for the GAA grounds.  It took me about ten minutes to get there.  I wandered towards the lonely dressing room.  As I tried to open the door I realised it was locked.  Luckily my Dad was a locksmith and I’d learnt a few tricks from him.  He told me that you don’t always need a key to unlock a door.  Within a minute or two I was inside, and lying there on the floor was my lucky boot.  I held it up in the air like it was the Sam Maguire Cup.
Suddenly I heard a voice  saying ‘Who’s in there?’  I got such a fright I dropped the boot.  I saw the door opening and a rather large shadow on the wall.  ‘Nathan, is that you?’ he asked.  ‘Grandad?’ I said, confused.  ‘What are you doing here?’  ‘I’m the care-taker here’, he replied.  ‘Now, what are YOU doing here?’ he asked.  ‘I came to get my football boot’, I said.  ‘Who came with you?’ he asked.  ‘No-one, I came by myself’.  ‘You shouldn’t have’, he said.  ‘It’s very dangerous.  Come on, get in my speed-boat and I’ll give you a lift home’. I was home in no time.
St Patrick’s Day finally arrived, the day of the big game.  I was really nervous, but the feeling of those boots on my feet gave me a spring in my step, and the confidence to score the winning point over St Vincent’s.  Mitchels, champions once again.
